Into the World He Leapt: Kole’s Birth Story August 19th 2009, 8:01am

Kole came into the world via c-section on 7:30am on August 19, 2009. In the first trimester I experienced bleeding due to a subchorionic hemorrhage and on and off during the entire pregnancy there had been unexplained spotting leading our OB and perinatologist to believe there was possibly a placental abruption. The prudent thing to do, as the perinatologist put it, was to lay low during the pregnancy, monitor him with biophysical ultrasounds and non-stress tests weekly in the third trimester, and take him out at 37 weeks before I could go into labor unmonitored and possibly hemorrhage and risk both of our lives.

Finally the alarm went off at 4am on the 19th. We collected our bags and pillows back up the car and were on our way to changes our lives forever. We arrived at Scottsdale Healthcare Shea just after 5:30am. We were admitted and ushered into our triage room quickly, and in a blink of an eye, and a few candid shots, all the prep work was done and we were on our way to the OR.

I was taken into the OR and Kurt sat patiently outside. Kurt said that it was the most difficult 10 minutes of his life. Watching the entire OR team enter a room where his wife and child waited and unable to be with them yet. Everyone passed with a cheerful hello as he pondered how life was about to change, what kind of dad he was going to be and let me get in there already!

Dr. Steven Wininger and Dr. Valerie Sorkin Wells and the OR team prepared me for the c-section and within mere moments of our OR arrival my spinal had set in, the field was isolated, Kurt came into the OR and we were ready to meet Kole. As they quickly worked I could see the surgeries progress in the reflective portion of the OR lamp. It was like looking at another person having a procedure done but eagerly waiting the moment to hear our little one’s cry.

While at work, Dr. Wininger was asked to sing Etta James at last by one of the OR team, and Kurt and I simultaneously said “Oh, that’s our wedding song.” Kurt proceeded to whip his iPhone from his scrub pocket and I then became the OR DJ while he took photos and as Etta’s sweet voice crooned, “At last my love has come along” it was time for our little love to arrive.

All of a sudden Dr. Sorkin Wells exclaimed, “Oh my, WOW, look at all that hair” and someone else said, “Here he comes”. The two gentle cries were heard, as if to continue his mellow gestational existence by announcing his arrival not with silence, or sharp declaration, but two of the most wonderful sounds to ever to fall on our ears.

Though just a moment later, so no one would doubt his vocal prowess, on the warming table assaulted by rubbing and his very first exam expectations, Kole let his first screeches out. The little banshee scored an 8 on his first apgar and a 9, 5 minutes later. Once he was weighed and measured he was swaddled up and Kurt brought him over so we could meet face to face, mother and child for the first time. We Eskimo kissed, nose to nose. Whispered to him, "You are loved and supported on your journey Kole Hudson Rowe.".

This is how Kole leapt into our world.
